So I weakened, and bought Ed the kid-sized drum kit that we saw in Sam Adato's shop on Saturday. I spent Tuesday morning clearing away stuff in my den to make room, which is an ongoing project. The den is the room above Beth's wood shop, and so separate from the house to keep the noise away from #2 (due in early August). Here you can see Ed testing out the bass pedal, while tinging the clash cymbal. His seating position doesn't quite allow access to both pedals, and he's working with full size 16" drumsticks.
From above you can see the layout a little more clearly, with the skins angled towards the player in an arc.
Left to right, hi-hat, snare, small tom, bass, clash, middle tom, large tom (or floor tom).
The cymbals are the weak point of the kit, not being full size they don't make a great sound, but for the purposes of practise they work fine.
Beth cut down some sticks to 11", and they're much easier for Edward to wield. We're also making him wear ear protection in the form of some ear muffs that Beth bought for him to wear in her workshop.
Here's Sam Adato posing for me, having just set up the kit in his shop and checked the tuning etc. He gave me excellent service, and if we need to go back for a bigger kit in a few years time I'm pretty sure he'd even do a trade-in. He's a great guy, much more interested in getting the drums set up right for Edward than he was in taking my money.
